This woodcock (timberdoodle) was sitting perfectly still less than three feet from a student that had been sitting for several minutes observing clubmosses. It was seen only as we started to move, nearly stepping on it. A great photo opportunity! The students filed by and we returned to the classroom. It was a great lesson in camouflage and the defense tactic on remaining motionless. Students insisted that I return to the spot to be sure it was really ok. Our new friend had gone on its way.
